This guitar was built at the Wells Workshop by one of my students, John Coleman. John wanted to try some very different things on his instrument and I thought they turned out so well I wanted to share it with everyone. Initially, the guitar is all koa. top, back and sides. The fretboard and bridge are padouk. This is significant in one respect, padouk is very, very light. The bridge, without the maple underlay only weighed 14 grams (as opposed to ebony at about 36 grams). The guitar is a 13 fret to the body, 25.4″ scale. The neck is maple with a sapele center lamination. The headstock has a maple underlay just like the bridge and exposed in a very different way. Instead of inlaying the maple strip it is exposed by beveling the edge of the headstock. The bridge underlay completes the design for a very unique look. The guitar sounds great with a very crisp treble response.
